Breast Augmentation Overview
Breast implants are used for both cosmetic enhancement and reconstruction. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), approximately 193,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2020, ranking it among the top five cosmetic surgical procedures, alongside nose reshaping, eyelid surgery, facelifts, and liposuction.
Commonly referred to as "breast aug" or "boob job," this procedure involves the use of breast implants or fat transfer to increase breast size. It can also restore breast volume lost due to weight loss or pregnancy, enhance breast shape, and improve asymmetry.
Breast augmentation does not address severely drooping breasts. A breast lift may be required in conjunction with augmentation for sagging breasts to appear fuller and more lifted. Your plastic surgeon will help you determine the best approach.
Choosing Your Implants
1. Saline-Filled Implants: These consist of a silicone outer shell filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They come in various sizes and shell textures (smooth or textured). Saline implants are approved for augmentation in women aged 18 and older and for breast reconstruction in women of any age.
2. Silicone Gel-Filled Implants: These implants have a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel. They are available in different sizes and textures and are approved for augmentation in women aged 22 and older, as well as for reconstruction in women of any age.

What You Need to Know
Breast implants are not designed to last a lifetime. Replacement may be necessary after 10 years or sooner, depending on complications or changes in breast appearance.

3 Months Post-Op: Breasts may begin to look and feel more natural.

Studies indicate that breast implants do not increase breast cancer risk and do not delay its detection. Women with implants who develop breast cancer have similar remission rates as those without.
